Hallo, again. Today | continue t
character generator which | began last month. This
second part is for those of you who like to dabble in
machine code. | won't explain what is going on this
time, but maybe some other month. Have fun with
this program!

For those who dare, here is some further detail on
the character generator. The computer stores the
address of the start of the character table in its IR
register pair. To keep the right character tabie,
make sure the IR register pair contains 7680
(1EQOH). In fact, the R register is not important.
What is important is the | register. This must
contain 30(1EH). If the | register contains anything
less than 30, then the computer looks at the wrong
part of ROM for the character generator table. You
can change the “Il” register using assembly
language if you want to see some strange
characters. Try this: _

The second topic for the day is the PAUSE statement.
Usetul in many programs, the PAUSE can also be used
to wait for input from the keyboard ss discussed in
this excerpt:

PAUSE <n> BASIC Statement (“M” key, code=
242). Causes the computer to count for <n>/60
seconds if <n> _is-tess than 32768. PAUSE
<n> where n is greater than 32767 causes the
computer to count indefinitely. in any case, PAUSE
can be terminated by pressing any key.

PAUSE is useful when you want to give someone
time to read something on the screen. PAUSE also
allows you to set a maximum time someone is
allowed to see the screen. The largest PAUSE that
will terminate itself is PAUSE 32767. This causes a
pause of 32767/3600=9.1 minutes.

Oh, by the way, | got letters from Canede and
